Pinewood Takes 2nd at State The Pinewood Preparatory School Boys Varsity Golf Team wrapped up 2nd place in the South Carolina Independent School Association AAA division. The championship was held at the General James Hackler Course at Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach, SC, April 23-24, 2012. Conditions at the tournament were very cold and windy on day one and a bit warmer but still windy on day two, making for difficult playing conditions. Pinewood headed into the tournament as four time defending champions, bringing with them a young team that managed to earn a 2nd place finish against strong teams form Hilton Head Prep and Hilton Head Christian Academy. Pinewood shot rounds of 311-311 for a total of 622 (+46) and lost to HHP who shot 303-300 for a total of 603 (+27). HHC finished in just four shots behind Pinewood at 626 (+50), while a young Porter Guad team finished 6th with a 671 (+95). The Panthers were led by the strong play of junior Richard Hubbard who claimed runner-up in the individual medalist honors title. Hubbard led the tournament after day one with a round of 70 (-2), the only under-par round of the two days. Hubbard added a 76 on day two for a total of 146 (+2). Junior Katelyn Dambaugh shot 79-77 for a total of 156 (+12) while sophomore Reona Hirai was just one shot behind at 157 (+13). Junior Jeff Chickarello, playing in the championship for the first time, shot 163 (+19) to round out the scoring for Pinewood. Eighth grader JR Stark also played for the first time shooting 175 (+31). “Hilton Head Prep played well,” Pinewood Coach Greg Bachtle said. “It wasn’t that we lost, they won. We played well. They played better.” Individual Medalist Honors went to Woody Woodward of HHP with a two day score of 144 even par. Rounding out the top five finishers were Phillip Loeb of HHP tying with Bryson Nimmer of Hilton Head Christian at 150 (+6) for 3rd place and Tyler Williams of HHP at 151 (+7) in 5th place. SCISA also announced region honors for the 2012 year. Pinewood took 1st with 11 points; Hilton Head Christian tied with Hilton Head Prep for 2nd place with 6 points each. Three players from Pinewood were named to the All Region Team including Hubbard, Dambaugh and Hirai. Robert Ferira of Porter Gaud was also named to the team.
